Honduras: Health workers launch nationwide strike Dec. 5

Unionized health workers launch nationwide strike in Honduras, Dec. 5. Heightened security and disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Unionized health workers affiliated with The National Association of Nurses and Auxiliary Nurses of Honduras (La Asociacion Nacional de Enfermeros y Enfermeras Auxiliares de Honduras, ANEEAH) and Union of Medical, Hospital and Similar Workers (Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Medicina, Hospitales y Similares, SITRAMEDHYS) have launched a nationwide strike on Dec. 5. The purpose of the action is to demand improved salaries. Participants have stated that the strike will last indefinitely until they hear from the authorities. Reports indicate that activists have taken over several hospitals and highways.

The labor action will almost certainly impact medical services in Honduras. Available patient services will likely see increased congestion and wait times. However, participants have clarified that hospital personnel will continue attending to emergency room patients. Further strike-related protests are likely to occur during the work stoppage.

While the action should be largely peaceful, authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased police presence near any demonstrations that materialize as a precaution. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if authorities attempt to disperse crowds forcibly. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid any protests as a precaution. Confirm medical and business appointments in advance. Plan for residual public service disruptions. Allow additional time to reach destinations during the strike period. Heed instructions from local authorities.
