Bangladesh: Awami League party to stage protests in Dhaka through Dec. 10

Awami League party plans protests in Dhaka, Bangladesh, through Dec. 10. Increased security, transport disruptions likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

The ruling Awami League (AL) party plans to hold several rallies in Dhaka through Dec. 10 to mobilize greater political support amid the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) ongoing three-month political campaign. On Dec. 9, AL members will stage several protest marches at various undisclosed locations across the capital and hold a rally at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. On Dec. 10, AL activists will demonstrate at the Radio Colony Model School and College ground in Savar Upazila, Dhaka District; additional gatherings are also likely elsewhere, especially in Gazipur, Munshiganj, and Narayanganj.

Though organizers have not as yet revealed further details, potential gathering sites include prominent government buildings, party offices, parks, public squares, college and sports grounds, and major thoroughfares. The Dec. 10 rally will coincide with a planned BNP demonstration in the Naya Paltan area that same day. The US government has issued an advisory for its citizens to avoid the Dec. 10 demonstrations due to the increased potential for violence.

Authorities will almost certainly tighten security near the gathering site. Clashes between AL activists and police, as well as between AL supporters and counterdemonstrators, are possible, especially on Dec. 10. Demonstrators could also march along and/or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Localized business disruptions are also possible.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to the increased risk of violence. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe, nongovernmental building. Allow additional time near sites where gatherings materialize. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
