Brazil: Further clashes, lingering heightened security likely in Brasilia after pro-Bolsonaro protesters storm multiple government buildings Jan. 8 /update 1
Further clashes, heightened security likely in Brasilia, Brazil, after pro-Bolsonaro protesters storm multiple government buildings Jan. 8.
Event
Further clashes and heightened security are likely around Three Powers Plaza and surrounding areas of Brasilia over the coming hours after supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed multiple government buildings during a protest in the capital Jan. 8. Thousands of pro-Bolsonaro protesters reportedly broke through cordons set up by security forces in the area, gaining entry into the National Congress, Planalto Palace (i.e., presidential palace), and Supreme Court buildings; President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, inaugurated Jan. 1, is not currently in Brasilia, and neither chamber of Congress is in session. The apparent purpose of the protest is to denounce the election of Lula as the country's new president. Security forces have clashed with the demonstrators, launching tear gas in an attempt to forcibly disperse them from the area. Officials from Lula's Workers' Party and Federal District Security Secretary Anderson Torres have called on authorities to contain the protesters and restore order in central Brasilia.
Disruptions to transport and business remain likely in areas subject to protest activity, heightened security measures, and clashes over the coming hours.
Advice
Avoid the affected area. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent any related disruptions. If violence breaks out in your vicinity, leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and your home government.
