Brazil: Protests likely to continue nationwide through at least mid January /update 7

Demonstrations in response to the invasion of government buildings in Brasilia likely to continue in Brazil through at least mid-January.

Warning

Event

Activists are likely to demonstrate nationwide in Brazil through at least mid-January in response to the invasion of governmental buildings in Brasilia on Jan. 8. Pro-democracy groups will likely continue to organize marches and demonstrations condemning the recent attacks of the National Congress, Supreme Court, Presidential Palace, demand the arrest of those responsible, and show support for the current government. Additional protests are possible by groups in opposition to the election of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva despite the Supreme Court ordering the removal of the protester campsites outside military barracks.

Security personnel will almost certainly deploy to any demonstrations that may materialize. Disruptions to roads, including highways and routes leading to airports, and business activities remain likely. Gatherings outside military headquarters and government buildings may also continue despite the Supreme Court's order. Clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out, especially if protesters refuse to disperse or leave illegal camping sites. Further confrontations between opposing groups of protesters are also possible.

Advice

Avoid all protests and related events as a precaution. Do not attempt to cross protester roadblocks; utilize alternative routes or wait for the police to reopen impacted roads. Confirm business appointments in advance. Allow additional time to reach destinations in affected locations.
