Pakistan: Political rally planned in Peshawar January 24, 26

Opposition political parties call for a rally in Peshawar on January 24,26; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions expected

Pakhtunkhwa Jamhoori Ittehad, an alliance of opposition parties, has called for a rally in Peshawar (Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province) on Friday, January 24, to denounce the ongoing flour crisis and related price hikes. Participants plan to gather at 14:00 (local time) at the Khyber Bazaar and then head to the Peshawar Press Club.

The same group announced that they will participate in another demonstration on Sunday, January 26, to commemorate the death anniversary of Kakaji Sanobar Hussain Momand, an important figure of the independence war. Details regarding time and location of the demonstration were not available as of Thursday, January 23.

Heightened security measures and transportation disruptions are to be expected near all demonstration sites.

Individuals in Peshawar are advised to avoid all public gatherings as a precaution, refrain from discussing political topics in public or on social media, and anticipate transportation and business disruptions near protest sites and a heightened security presence.
