Mali: Militants ransack school in Mopti region May 24
Suspected jihadist militants ransacked and set fire to a school in Ndodjiga district, Mopti region, on May 24
Event
Suspected jihadist militants ransacked and set fire to a primary school in the Ndodjiga district of the Mopti region on Wednesday, May 24. The school is known to provide Western-style education with courses taught in French. The assailants reportedly threatened to attack other schools that provide instruction in French. According to police sources, security measures will be reinforced in the area. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack although some local residents suspect the assailants to be linked with the radical preacher Amadou Koufra, himself affiliated with the Islamist leader Iyad Ag Ghali.
Context
Jihadists militants are fighting to impose their own strict interpretation of Islam throughout Mali, including by attempting to mold the education system through intimidation and force. These groups often target Western-backed institutes and figures in a bid to impose Sharia and eliminate Western influence.
Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite a French-led intervention launched in 2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds. France maintains approximately 4000 troops who are stationed throughout the Sahel. Additionally, MINUSMA is one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
Advice
Due to the underlying terrorist and kidnapping threats prevalent in the country, all those present in Mali are advised to remain discreet regarding personal details, particularly information concerning nationality, employment, family, etc. Individuals are also advised to avoid public events and places frequented by Westerners, to remain vigilant at all times (especially in local markets, now used by terrorists as recruitment grounds), and to report any suspicious objects or behavior to the authorities.
The security environment in Mali remains complex, particularly in the north and central regions. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
