Mali: Two UN peacekeepers killed in an ambush May 23

Event

The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) announced that two Chadian peacekeepers were killed and one injured in an ambush perpetrated outside the city of Aguelhok, Kidal region, at approximately 06:30 (local time) on Tuesday, May 23. At least six people have been arrested. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite a French-led intervention launched in 2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds. France maintains approximately 4000 troops who are stationed throughout the Sahel. Additionally, MINUSMA is one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
