Mali: Ethnic clashes kill 31 in Mopti region June 17-18

Event

Clashes between Dongo farmers and ethnic Fulani cattle herders occurred in the Koro circle of the Mopti region (central Mali), between June 17 and June 18. At least 31 civilians – 27 Fulani and four Dongos – were killed, and nine others injured in the fighting. The incident was reportedly linked to the death of one Dongo following a dispute that erupted between the two communities in the previous week. 

Context

Violent clashes between Fulani and Dongos or Bambara people over land disputes are frequent in central Mali and have increased in the past year. Illicit weapons trade in the region and the presence of armed groups linked to the Fulani jihadist preacher Amadou Koufa - with whom Fulani are often suspected of collusion - makes these ethnic clashes particularly deadly.
