Mali: Increased security for G5 Sahel summit in Bamako July 1-3

Event

The G5 Sahel group summit is scheduled to take place in Bamako on Sunday, July 2; heightened security and significant transportation disruptions are anticipated July 1-3 given the planned attendance of regional heads of state and French President Emmanuel Macron. Road closures and transportation delays should be expected, particularly on roadways to and from Bamako-Sénou International Airport (BKO) during that time.

Context

The Group of Five Sahel (G5S or G5 Sahel) includes as members the nations of Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger, as well as the African Union. After receiving an endorsement from the United Nations Security Council on June 21, the group plans to use the July 2 summit to move forward with the creation of the G5 Sahel joint force (Force conjointe du G5 Sahel; FC-G5S) to address the regional threat of terrorism and transnational organized crime.
