Mali: Two Malian soldiers killed in an ambush in the Segou region May 31

Event

Unidentified armed men reportedly ambushed a Malian army convoy on the road between Diabaly and Nampala in the Segou region at approximately 17:00 (local time) on Wednesday, May 31. At least two soldiers were killed during the attack. A number of others were wounded and several are reportedly missing.

The same day, media sources reported that unidentified armed men set fire to schools and town halls in Gouro and Sare localities in the Mopti region.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite a French-led intervention launched in 2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds. France maintains approximately 4000 troops who are stationed throughout the Sahel. Additionally, MINUSMA is one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
