Two people killed and three wounded during an ambush in Esna on August 3

A policeman and civilian were killed and three people were wounded during an ambush on the night of Thursday, August 3 in Esna (south of Luxor), according to a statement issued by the Egyptian Interior Ministry. One of the perpetrators was apprehended at the scene, however the other suspect fled. 

An investigation into the incident is currently underway. No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the attack, however security is likely to be tight in Esna in the coming week.

Context

Attacks on security forces have been frequent in Egypt, and the country has been under a nationwide state of emergency since April 2017, when IS militants carried out attacks on two churches in Tanta and Alexandria, leaving over 50 people dead
