Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issues alert for possible tsunami or "hazardous waves" around the Pacific coast of Central America after magnitude-8 earthquake recorded off southern coast of Mexico early morning September 8

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a strong magnitude-8 earthquake struck southwest of Pijijiapan, Mexico, in the early morning hours of Friday, September 8; a warning for possible tsunami waves off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico, has also been issued. There have been no immediate reports of injuries or damages. Aftershocks are possible.
Advice
All those present in the region are advised to avoid impacted areas and coastal regions. After an earthquake, check for injuries and take note of your surroundings. If indoors, shut off the water, gas, and electricity lines, and evacuate the area. Aftershocks often follow an earthquake and can lead to further damages and loss of life. Individuals already present in areas affected by the earthquake are advised to follow all instructions issued by local authorities.
