Mexico: Tropical storm warnings for Baja California September 17 /update 3

Tropical storm warnings in effect for Baja California Sur; Tropical Storm Norma expected to weaken through Monday, September 18

Warning

Event

On Sunday September 17, the National Hurricane Center issued tropical storm warnings for the western coast of Mexico as Tropical Storm Norma heads toward Baja California. The Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from Los Barilles to Todos Santos, and a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect from Todos Santos to Cabo San Lazaro. Norma is forecast to move northwest, and remain off the west coast of Baja California as it weakens through Monday September 18. Rainfall of 5-10 cm (2-4 in) is expected in the southern parts of the state of Baja California Sur

Officials in Baja California Sur prepared storm shelters and canceled classes on Monday, as well as a planned military parade in the state capital, La Paz, amid Mexican Independence Day celebrations.

Context

The peninsular region that's home to the twin resort cities of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo was hit about two weeks ago by Tropical Storm Lidia, which flooded streets and homes and killed at least four people.

Mexico's Pacific Hurricane Season extends from May 15 to November 30 (and the Atlantic Hurricane Season from June 1 to November 30), with the largest concentration of storms typically occurring between August and October.

Advice

Individuals in Mexico are advised to follow local weather forecasts and adhere to any advice issued by regional authorities (e.g. potential evacuation orders). In the event of flooding, keep in mind that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
