A shootout between Mexican security forces and members of the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel (Cartel de Santa Rosa de Lima, CSRL) drug trafficking organization (DTO) occurred near Buenavista, Yuriria Municipality, Guanajuato State, Jan. 6. A detachment of the State Public Security Forces (Fuerzas de Seguridad Publica del Estado, FSPE) was deployed to the area after reports of a previous attack by armed civilians. At approximately 05:00, gunmen opened fire on the security forces, who then returned fire; at least 10 armed civilians were killed, and three FSPE members were injured. Later in the day, DTO members responded by burning vehicles on state highways.
Buenavista is approximately 45 km (28 miles) west-northwest of Morelia, Michoacan.
Guanajuato is heavily affected by DTO activity. Violence involving DTOs, including the CSRL and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion, CJNG) occur frequently.
