Mali: Anti-French troops protest in Kidal October 9 /update 1
Local residents in Kidal protest October 9 to demand departure of French Barkhane forces following controversial anti-terrorist operations
Event
On Monday, October 9, local residents protested in front of the MINUSMA camp in Kidal to demand the departure of French military forces - part of Operation Barkhane - denouncing the way French soldiers handle security operations (i.e. with brutality). Two related demonstrations took place on October 6 and October 9, during which protesters threw stones at French army vehicles. Further protests are likely in the coming days.
Context
Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the French-led intervention launched in 2013 that has driven many extremists from their strongholds. France maintains approximately 4000 troops stationed throughout the Sahel.
Protests have been held previously in Bamako and other northern cities, including Kidal, to denounce what the population perceives as the French army’s bias in the northern region in favor of armed groups such as the Coordination of Azawad Movement (CMA).
Advice
The security environment in Mali remains complex, particularly in the north and central regions. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
Due to the underlying terrorist and kidnapping threats prevalent in the country, all those present in Mali are advised to remain discreet regarding personal details, particularly information concerning nationality, employment, family, etc. Individuals are also advised to avoid public events and places frequented by Westerners, to remain vigilant at all times (especially in local markets, now used by terrorists as recruitment grounds), and to report any suspicious objects or behavior to the authorities.
