Second phase of Bishwa Ijtema religious gathering to take place around Tongi (north of Dhaka) Jan. 19-21; increased security, extreme crowding, and transportation disruptions anticipated
Event
Over a million people are expected to gather in Tongi, some 3 km (1.8 mi) north of Dhaka, from Friday, January 19, through Sunday, January 21, for the second phase of the Muslim religious gathering of Bishwa Ijtema. During the festival, large gatherings of devotees are expected along the Turag River. Associated gatherings are also anticipated in Ashulia and the Cherag Ali area and BSCIC industrial area (Tongi), as well as the Khilkhet district (Dhaka).
An additional 7000 police will reportedly be deployed to ensure the safety of attendees. Transportation disruptions and crowded conditions should be expected in the vicinity of the event, and at major transportation hubs in Dhaka through January 21. Since Friday, January 12, police have reportedly closed a number of major roads, creating traffic disruptions on routes to Gazipur and Ashulia.
Context
Bishwa Ijtema, also called the World Muslims’ Congregation, has been held in Bangladesh annually since 1946 and is considered the world's second-largest congregation of Muslims. The event features large prayer meetings, and is often attended by prominent Islamic scholars from various countries. Due to overcrowding, the Bishwa Ijtema was divided into two phases each year; the first phase in 2018 occurred from January 12 to 14.
Advice
Individuals present in Dhaka are advised to avoid any large gatherings as a precaution, to anticipate significant transportation disruptions, to adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities, and to report any suspicious behavior or objects to the police
