Mali: Militants ambush soldiers in Mopti region Jan. 9

Event

A Malian National Guard convoy was attacked by suspected militants while traveling through the central Mopti region on Tuesday, January 9. The soldiers were ambushed near the town of Djenné at approximately 18:00 (local time). Military officials confirmed that one soldier was killed and four others wounded in the attack. Several of the militants also died during the fighting. No group has claimed responsibility for the ambush as of Wednesday, January 10.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite a French-led intervention launched in 2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds. France maintains approximately 4000 troops stationed throughout the Sahel, in addition to the presence of local military troops.
