Bolivia: Coca farmers clash with police in La Paz March 20

Police officers clash with coca farmers outside market in La Paz March 20; further protests possible

Warning

Event

Tensions between police and coca farmers remain high in La Paz following clashes that broke out on Tuesday, March 20, after the authorities closed down a coca market. Hundreds of people attempted to force their way into the market in the Villa Fátima area using rocks. Police officers fired tear gas to disperse the crowd and arrested at least five people. Further protests and clashes are possible in the coming days.

Context

The coca farmers are largely from the Yungas region, where growing coca is legal. Farmers started arriving in La Paz on March 19 to protest new government legislation that limits the amount of land that can be used for coca growing in Yungas, while allowing additional land to be cultivated in Cochabamba department.

Advice

Individuals in La Paz are advised to monitor the situation and avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
