Bolivia: Large gathering between La Paz and Oruro March 10

Large gathering between La Paz and Oruro on March 10 in support of Bolivian territorial claim; anticipate transportation disruptions

Warning

Event

A large gathering is set to take place on Saturday, March 10, in La Paz and on the highway between La Paz and Oruro, in support of Bolivia’s territorial claim over the Atacama corridor. Government officials have announced that between 20,000 and 30,000 people are expected to participate in the “Banderazo,” during which a 70-km long (45-mi) flag will be extended along the Autovía 1 highway. Some 10,000 Bolivian soldiers will reportedly be deployed to oversee the gathering. Associated transportation disruptions are to be anticipated.

Context

In 2013, Bolivia filed a lawsuit at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), demanding that Chile cede to Bolivia 120,000 km² (46,000 mi²) of territory, including 400 km² (155 mi²) of coastline. Part of the territory that Bolivia claims was lost to Chile following the War of the Pacific (1879-83), which left the country landlocked. A court hearing will be held at the ICJ in The Hague from March 19 to March 28.

Advice

Individuals present in Bolivia are advised to prepare for associated traffic disruptions and avoid all protests as a precaution.
