One soldier was reportedly killed near the regional court building during the fighting.

Tensions have been high between Songhai and Arab communities since February 21, when two Arab merchants were reportedly kidnapped by unidentified armed men. One of the abducted merchants was later found dead in the town of Gao, leading to multiple protests by Arab residents.
