Egypt: Heavy rains in Cairo April 24-26

Heavy rains hit Cairo and other parts of Egypt April 24-26; localized flooding reported

Warning

Event

Egypt has been hit with rare torrential downpours, notably affecting the capital Cairo, since Tuesday, April 24; they are forecast to continue through Thursday, April 26. Localized flooding and property damages have been reported; the rains have also prompted highway closures. The Cairo suburb "New Cairo" was one of the hardest hit areas, with people trapped in cars and electrical cables falling into standing floodwater.

According to the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, improved weather conditions are expecting starting on Friday.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, to avoid areas directly hit by flooding, and to adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
