Clashes in Tombouctou region on April 8; five jihadists killed and four Malian soldiers wounded

Warning

Event

According to a French military spokesperson, at least five jihadist militants were killed in clashes approximately 120 km (75 mi) north of the city of Timbuktu (Tombouctou region). Also on Sunday, a Malian military vehicle hit a landmine or improvised explosive device (IED) near the town of Léré (Tombouctou region). According to military officials, the blast wounded at least four Malian soldiers.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite a French-led intervention launched in 2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds. France maintains approximately 4000 troops stationed throughout the Sahel, in addition to the presence of local military troops.

Advice

The security environment in Mali remains complex, particularly in the north and central regions. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
