Event

The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), a local Al-Qa'ida affiliate, reportedly claimed responsibility for the assault on the G5 Sahel base in Sévaré (Mopti region) on Friday, June 29. According to Malian defense officials, a suicide vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (SVBIED) detonate while attempting to enter the camp. A number of attackers reportedly infiltrated the base and engaged security forces. Militants also fired mortars or rockets during the assault. According to the governor of Mopti region, four attackers were captured and three were killed in the fighting. At least two Malian soldiers also died.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions, including Mopti, remain unstable despite the presence of MINUSMA, one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world, and a French-led intervention launched in 2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds.

Advice

Individuals are advised to avoid the area until further notice. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel to Mali.
