Mali: At least 16 killed in attack Mopti region June 9

Suspected jihadists militants attack Boni (Mopti region) on June 9; at least 13 militants and three Malian soldiers killed

On the morning (local time) of Saturday, June 9, suspected jihadist militants attacked the town of Boni in the cercle de Douentza (Mopti region). Malian soldiers reportedly repulsed the attack, killing at least 13 militants. Three Malian soldiers were killed, and three more wounded in the incident. Further attacks by jihadist militants are likely in the coming days and weeks.

Context

Due to the presence of these and various other armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite a French-led intervention launched in 2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds.
