Mali: Attack against G5 Sahel headquarters in Sévaré June 29
Early reports of a large explosion and gunfire at the G5 Sahel headquarters in Sévaré (Mopti region) June 29
Event
There are early reports of a large explosion and gunfire at the G5 Sahel headquarters in the town of Sévaré (Mopti region; central Mali) as of around 14:00 (local time) on Friday, June 29.
Context
Due
to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central
regions, including Mopti, remain unstable despite the presence of MINUSMA, one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions
in the world, and a French-led intervention launched in
2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds.
Advice
Individuals are advised to avoid the area until further notice. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel to Mali.
