Mali: Rioters raid local government buildings in Kéniéba June 11

Rioters, mostly youths, reportedly set fire to local government buildings, including the local prefect's office and home, in the town of Kéniéba (Kayes region) on Monday, June 11, amid a dispute between mine workers and management as well as grievances among local youths who claim there is a lack of work opportunities at a local gold mine. According to unconfirmed reports, at least two people were killed and multiple others wounded in associated clashes between protesters and police. Further related unrest is possible in Kéniéba cercle (a subdivision of Kayes region) in the near-term.

Context

According to local reports, the unrest was primarily spurred by demands among residents for a local mining company to provide employment quotas, particularly for local youths.
