Violent unrest and intercommunal clashes reported in Timbuktu on July 25-26

Violent unrest and intercommunal clashes were reported in Timbuktu (Tombouctou region) on Wednesday, July 25, and Thursday, July 26. According to local sources, the unrest was sparked by the arrests of four Arabic-speaking youths by security forces. Reports indicate that several gunshots were heard in the city and that multiple vehicles were set ablaze by the protesters. Nevertheless, no injuries were reported in the clashes. The situation normalized on the evening of July 26 (local time) following the deployment of security forces. Additional intercommunal clashes are possible in the Timbuktu area in the near-term.
