Honduras: Student protests in Tegucigalpa August 2 /update 8

Ongoing student protests in Tegucigalpa August 2; heightened security and traffic disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Student protests, organized by the Student University Movement (MEU), are taking place at the National Autonomous University of Honduras in Tegucigalpa on Thursday, August 2, to renounce the increase in public transportation fares. The group has stated that the length of the protest is dependent on the students. Further such protests are possible in the coming days. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are expected near the demonstration sites.

Context

Clashes broke out between MEU protesters and police during an associated demonstration in Tegucigalpa on July 25, when police used tear gas to disperse a crowd of students blocking traffic on Bulevar Suyapa near the UNAH campus (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras).

Advice

Individuals in Tegucigalpa are advised to avoid all protests due to the risk of violence and to refrain from using public transportation and inter-city buses at all times for security reasons.
