Thailand: Flooding causes evacuations and disruptions in northern Thailand August 18 /update 2

Event

Heavy flooding continues to affect northern Thailand, particularly in Nan and Chiang Mai provinces, following the arrival of tropical depression Bebinca on Thursday, August 16. Local authorities closed the Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai highway (Highway 118) as of Saturday, August 18, after flash floods washed out five segments in Doi Saket district (Chiang Mai province). The highway will remain closed until it can be repaired. To the east, Nan province continues to be affected by heavy flooding along the Nan River, forcing around 10,000 people to evacuate. The districts of Phu Phiang, Tha Wang Pha, and Mueang are experiencing the worst flooding, with water levels between 1-3 m (3.3-9.8 ft) high. Rain is expected to persist across northern Thailand in the coming days. Further flooding and transportation disruptions are possible.
