Bangladesh: Road traffic disrupted on Dhaka-Chittagong highway (Sept. 6)

Tailbacks at different points on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway affect Dhaka-bound commuters

Informational

Event

On September 6, morning traffic jams at several points on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway have been affecting Dhaka-bound commuters, especially between Daudkandi toll plaza and Shahidnagar, as well as from Gazaria to Meghna bridge, on the way to capital city Dhaka.

Context

The issue of traffic and road safety has been an increasingly contested subject between the population and the authorities. In the aftermath of a road traffic accident in Dhaka at the end of July, which resulted in the deaths of 2 students, Bangladesh has witnessed a series of protests, some of which have turned violent.

Advice

Individuals present in Bangladesh - especially in the capital city Dhaka - are advised to stay away from public gatherings, marches and protests as they may turn violent. Adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
