Mali: Severe flooding in northern regions
Heavy rain causes severe flooding in Tombouctou and Taoudénit regions over the past month
Event
Heavy rain has caused widespread flooding over the past month in Mali's northern regions of Tombouctou and Taoudénit. According to local authorities, several hundred buildings were destroyed by the flooding and associated landslides. At least 21,902 people have reportedly been affected. Local forecasts indicate the rains are generally expected to subside in the coming days, however, even relatively minor precipitation in the already over-saturated region could further worsen conditions.
Advice
Individuals present in affected areas should monitor local weather reports, anticipate flooding and associated transportation disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and foodstuffs discarded.
