Teachers in Buenos Aires province are holding a 48-hour strike on Monday, October 8, and Tuesday, October 9. The strike may result in school closures. Associated street protests with the potential to result in localized traffic disruptions are to be anticipated, including outside the Casa de la Provincia government building, located in the provincial capital La Plata.

Teacher unions have warned that they will hold further actions in the coming week should the government ignore their demands.

Context

Teachers are demanding higher salaries amid major inflation as well as increased investment in school infrastructure, claiming some schools are currently unsafe.  

Sociopolitical tensions are high in Argentina and protests are regularly organized to denounce policies and reforms implemented by the conservative government of President Mauricio Macri. Numerous teacher strikes have taken place in recent years, notably in the province of Buenos Aires.
