Mali: IED kills at least seven people in Ménaka October 24

Event

A convoy belonging to the pro-government Imghad Tuareg Self-Defense Group and Allies (GATIA) militia hit a landmine or improvised explosive device (IED) near Indjarsammane (Ménaka region) on Wednesday, October 24. At least seven people were killed in the incident. Further such attacks are possible in the coming days and weeks.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world. According to a UN report released in September, at least 42 improvised explosive devices (IED) attacks had been carried out in the previous three months; more than a third of these occurred in central Mali.
