Mali: Military convoy hits landmine in Mopti region Oct. 11

Event

A military convoy hit a landmine while traveling between Djoungani and Koro (Mopti region) on Thursday, October 11. Three soldiers were killed and four others injured. Further such attacks are possible in the coming days and weeks.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of MINUSMA, one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world, and a French-led intervention launched in 2013 that drove many extremists from their strongholds. According to a UN report released in September, at least 42 improvised explosive devices (IED) attacks had been carried out in the previous three months; more than a third of these occurred in central Mali.
