Bangladesh: Opposition coalition protests November 8-9

The Jatiya Oikya Front opposition coalition is calling for protests to be held on November 8-9 across the country, as the government has failed to implement a caretaker government in time for the December 2018 elections. The largest gathering is likely in the capital Dhaka, where a march to the Election Commission office in the Agargaon district of Dhaka will be held on November 8. A rally is also scheduled in Rajshahi on November 9. Numerous other protests can be expected in the run-up to the election; unrest cannot be excluded.

Context

The Oikya coalition was formed in October 2018 and is comprised of four political parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). They are demanding the release of opposition leader Khaleda Zia from prison, in addition to various grievances and the implementation of a caretaker government. This is a key factor in determining whether the opposition will actually participate in the upcoming elections or not. As a reminder, the opposition boycotted the last general elections.

General elections are set to be held during the third week of December; the exact date is meant to be made public on November 8.
