Mali: Military launches operations in Nara and Banamba

On Thursday, November 8, Malian military authorities announced that security forces had launched operations in the Cercle de Nara and Cercle de Banamba. According to reports, forces were deployed to the areas after suspected jihadist militants forced schools to close in Nara and Banamba. At least 15 suspected militants were arrested by security forces. Clashes between jihadist militants and the Malian military are possible over the near term.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
