Demonstrators erect roadblocks in La Paz, Santa Cruz, and other cities amid nationwide strike December 6; significant transportation disruptions to be expected in affected areas

Demonstrations and roadblocks have been reported in La Paz, Santa Cruz, and other cities in Bolivia on Thursday, December 6, amid a nationwide strike organized to denounce the candidacy of incumbent President Evo Morales for the January 2019 presidential primary elections. Airports in La Paz and Santa Cruz have not reported significant flight disruptions (e.g. delays and cancelations) due to the strike; however, protests, roadblocks, and significant traffic disruptions are to be expected over the coming hours and days. Additional demonstrations and roadblocks are to be anticipated in advance of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal's (TSE's) anticipated announcement of candidates for the January 2019 primaries on Saturday, December 8.
Context
Opposition groups argue Morales is constitutionally barred from seeking re-election following a 2016 referendum which upheld term limits. The high court has since ruled in favor of Morales paving the way for his candidacy in 2019. Primary elections are scheduled for January 27, 2019.
