Bolivia: Nationwide general strike December 6

Opposition groups call for nationwide general strike on December 6 amid ongoing demonstrations; additional strikes and protests threatened

Warning

Event

Civil society organizations, opposition parties, and labor unions have announced a nationwide general strike on Thursday, December 6, to protest the potential re-election bid of President Evo Morales which they contend would be illegal. Demonstrations and hunger strikes have been ongoing and are set to continue at least through Saturday, December 8, when the Supreme Electoral Tribunal is expected to announce candidate lists for the 2019 primary election. The groups have also threatened to hold an additional nationwide strike on Monday, December 10. Demonstrations are expected in major cities throughout Bolivia, including La Paz and Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

Context

Opposition groups argue Morales is constitutionally barred from seeking re-election following a 2016 referendum which upheld term limits. The high court has since ruled in favor of Morales paving the way for his candidacy in 2019. Primary elections are scheduled for January 27, 2019.

Advice

Individuals in Bolivia are advised to monitor developments to the situation, anticipate transportation disruptions, and avoid public demonstrations as a precaution.
