Mali: Additional security forces to deploy to northern Mali

Malian Prime Minister Soumeylou Boubeye Maïga announced on Saturday, December 15, that security measures will be increased in the northern Tombouctou and Taoudéni regions. Maïga made the decision following a two-day visit to the city of Timbuktu. According to Maïga, an additional 350 police, gendarmerie, and National Guard personnel will be deployed into Tombouctou in order to combat crime and militant groups in the region. A new border guard service and improved logistical support will also be established, particularly in the newly created Taoudéni region. The reinforcements are expected to arrive in the beginning of 2019.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the MINUSMA, one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
