Suspected Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) militants kill nine people in Andéramboukane cercle (Ménaka region) December 19; similar attacks possible in the near term

Suspected Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) gunmen attacked a Touareg camp in D'Abanguilou area (Andéramboukane cercle, Ménaka region) on Wednesday, December 19, killing six Touareg civilians. Movement for the Salvation of Azawad (MSA) fighters launched a counterattack near the Nigerien border, killing at least ten ISGS militants; three MSA fighters were also killed in the skirmish. Additional ISGS attacks targeting Touareg communities are possible in Ménaka in the near term.
Context
Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the MINUSMA, one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
