Event

Civil society groups called for protests to take place on Monday, December 10, in the capital Bamako, coinciding with world Human Rights Day, to denounce the current economic and security situation. Protesters are planning to march from Place de Liberté to the Monument de l'Indépendance. Another itinerary from the Pyramide du Souvenir towards the Maison de la Presse was announced, should the protest be banned by the authorities. A heightened security presence is likely along the march route. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Similar demonstrations held on November 16 and December 8 were dispersed by security forces.

Advice

Travelers in Mali and specifically in Bamako are advised to closely monitor the situation and avoid all gatherings due to the risk of clashes between protesters and the security forces.

As a side note, the security environment in Mali remains complex, particularly in the north and central regions. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
