Egypt: Sandstorms affect several cities nationwide January 16

Sandstorms cause road, sea, and air transportation disruptions in Cairo, Alexandria, and other cities January 16; further travel disruptions possible

Warning

Event

Sandstorms disrupted road, sea, and air transportation across Egypt on Wednesday, January 16. The storm halted operations at the ports of Suez and Zeitiyat (Suez province) as well as the Alexandria and Dekhleila ports (Alexandria province) due to high winds and waves, while several flight delays were reported at Cairo International Airport (CAI). Reduced visibility in Cairo also led to dangerous driving conditions on Wednesday. Health officials advised those with respiratory problems to remain inside during the storm, which the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) said the weather system will continue to impact the Nile Delta, Cairo, Upper Egypt, and Sinai regions until Thursday, January 17.

Advice

Individuals in or planning travel to Egypt are advised to monitor weather reports, confirm travel reservations, anticipate transportation disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities. Contact your airline for more information regarding potential flight disruptions.
