Event
A Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) convoy hit a mine or improvised explosive device (IED) in Macina cercle (Ségou region) on the road between Saye and Toyé on the morning (local time) of Monday, January 28. According to military officials, at least four Malian soldiers were killed in the blast, with two more suffering serious injuries. Further such attacks are possible in the coming days and weeks.
Context
Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
