Mali: UN peacekeepers attacked in Aguelhok January 20

Event

On Saturday, January 20, jihadist militants launched an attack on United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) forces in Aguelhok (northeast). At least ten Chadian peacekeepers were killed and 25 others injured in the attack. Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) claimed responsibility for the attack, reportedly launched in response to the resumption of diplomatic ties between the Chadian and the Israeli government. Further such attacks are possible in the coming days and weeks.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world. Since 2013, 170 peacekeepers have been killed in Mali.
