Bangladesh: BNP protest planned in Dhaka February 8 /update 29

The Bangladesh National Party (BNP) plans to hold a rally in Dhaka on February 8; heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions expected

Warning

Event

The Secretary General of the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) announce on January 29 that a rally in support of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will be held in Dhaka on Friday, February 8. Supporters will gather at Suhrawardy Udyan starting at 14:00 (local time). As of Thursday, January 31, authorities have not granted the BNP permission to hold the event. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are expected around the protest site, particularly if it is held without permission.

Context

Zia was jailed for five years in February 2018 in connection with an embezzlement scheme worth USD 250,000. Her BNP supporters claim the case is politically motivated and meant to keep her out of the December 2018 elections. The BNP has held regular protests in recent months demanding her release.

Advice

Individuals present in Dhaka, and Bangladesh more generally, are advised to avoid all public gatherings and political rallies as a precaution and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
