Mali: Suspected militant attacks reported in Mopti region February 12

Event

Unidentified militants detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) and opened fire on a gendarmerie convoy in Mopti region on a road between Mopti and Dialloubé on Tuesday, February 12. According to local authorities, three gendarmes were killed in the attack. Additionally, two Malian soldiers patrolling near the villages of Koro and Bankass were killed by unidentified attackers on Tuesday. No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks. Further such incidents are possible in the coming days and weeks.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world.
