Mali: At least 16 killed in raid on Mopti army base March 16-17 /update 1

Event

Unknown gunmen attacked and temporarily seized a military base in Mopti region the night (local time) of Saturday, March 16, according to local authorities. The attack took place in Dioura lasted until the early hours of Sunday, March 17. The gunmen burned the camp and looted supplies, including vehicles, before leaving. An army spokesman confirmed the attack but did not comment on details. Similar incidents are likely in central Mali, including Mopti region, in the near term.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world. Since 2013, some 170 peacekeepers have been killed in Mali.
