Mali: Protest in Bamako to denounce ongoing teacher strike March 22 /update 3

Members of the Collective of Muslim Associations in Mali (CAMM) are planning to stage a protest in the capital Bamako on Friday, March 22, to denounce a teacher strike ongoing since March 11, and scheduled to last until April 5. Protesters are expected to gather at 16:00 (local time) at Bourse du Travail and march to the Monument de l'Indépendance. A heightened security presence along with associated transportation disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the march. Further protests by teachers and students are likely during the work stoppage, particularly in Bamako and other major urban areas.

Context

Teachers' unions called for another round of nationwide strikes from March 11 to April 5 to demand better working conditions, housing stipends, and new rules governing the nominations of education officials, among other issues. Thousands of teachers participated in a protest march in Bamako on March 5. Related negotiations have been ongoing with the government in recent months. In addition, students launched a related 72-hour strike on March 11.

Teachers, lawyers, and health workers across the country held significant strikes throughout 2018.
