Mali: Teachers plan further strikes March 11 - April 5 /update 2

Teachers’ unions called for another round of nationwide strikes to begin on Monday, March 11, to demand better working conditions, housing stipends, and new rules governing the nominations of education officials, among other issues. According to union leaders, the teachers plan to strike from March 11-15, March 18-22, and April 1-5 if the government does not meet their demands. In addition, students launched a related 72-hour strike on March 11, set to continue at least through March 13.

Associated protests by teachers and students are likely during the work stoppage, particularly in Bamako and other major urban areas. While previous protests have remained peaceful, heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected around all demonstrations.
