Argentina: Union leaders call for general strike April 30
Union leaders opposed to President Mauricio Macri's administration call for general strike on April 30; transportation and commercial disruptions possible
Event
Several union leaders who oppose President Mauricio Macri's administration are calling for union members to hold a general strike on Tuesday, April 30. The protest movement is being led by Hugo Moyano, a supporter of former President Cristina Kirchner. Mayano announced the strike at a conference on Friday, April 12, where he was joined by union leaders from other sectors including mechanics, bank workers, teachers, and lawmakers. Transportation and other commercial disruptions are possible on April 30 if the strike is held. Associated demonstrations may also take place, although none have been announced as of Wednesday, April 17.
A transportation strike led by the Confederation of Argentine Transport Workers (CATT) is also set to take place on Wednesday, May 1. The strike is expected to affect rail, subway, and bus services.
Context
Mayano has accused the CGT union confederation of failing to put pressure on President Macri and preventing thousands of workers from losing their jobs. CATT leaders have confirmed the union; will not participate in the April 30 strike.
Advice
Individuals in Argentina are advised to monitor the situation, anticipate significant public transportation disruptions and increased demand for alternative modes of transportation, and avoid any related public demonstrations as a precaution.
